Round table "Sustainable Development of Tourism in the Arctic: Balancing Between Ecology and Investment"

Tourists from all over the world are attracted by the unique nature of the Arctic, which gives them the opportunity to see with their own eyes a wonderful and mysterious land, to learn about the distinctive culture, everyday life and traditions of the indigenous peoples of the North.

Tourism is becoming one of the strategic areas of sustainable development in the Arctic and northern regions, as evidenced by the fact that the main topic of the meeting of the State Council under the President of the Russian Federation during the Eastern Economic Forum - 2022 was the development of this area of the economy.

Tourism connected with the potential of the system of protected areas and indigenous communities of the North and the Arctic can become a key factor in the protection of unique natural and cultural heritage and a crucial driver of economic development of the global Arctic. ESG principles in tourism are no less important than in other sectors. At the same time, due to its geographical location, its difficult accessibility, tourism development in the Arctic requires very substantial investments in infrastructure, education. There is a need for mapping of landmarks, convenient tourist routes, and the use of information technology.

At the initiative of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, a Northern Forum working group on tourism development is being established and will hold its first round table event within the framework of the 4th Northern Forum on Sustainable Development.

The main goal of the event is to create a communication platform for promoting the unique tourism potential of the Arctic, attracting additional tourist flows and investments in the tourism sector, coordinating actions and determining the vec-tor of development in the tourism sector with a prerequisite for maintaining a balance between preserving the unique ecological system and attracting invest-ments.

The event is expected to be attended by representatives of federal and regional executive authorities, mass media, research, public and other organisations interested in the development of tourism in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.

In the focus of the discussion::

Monitoring tourism development as a balance between ecology in the Arctic
