Issues and Prospects of Developing Domestic Reindeer Husbandry in the Current Context

Northern domestic reindeer herding is one of the main types of traditional eco-nomic activity in the North, which plays a huge role in preserving the identity and culture of indigenous peoples. Their unique competencies allow them to engage in this activity in harsh conditions, while coexisting harmoniously with the fragile nature of the Far North.

Today, reindeer husbandry is going through difficult times. Despite the fact that Russia has the largest number of reindeer in the world and the potential to increase it, their number is declining. There are acute problems of shortage of personnel, degradation of reindeer pastures, and mar-keting of products. A separate big problem is the decline in the prestige of the reindeer herder profession. Now, in the context of sanctions and the suspension of the export of reindeer products, it is important to provide support for the in-dustry by coordinating the efforts of all authorized authorities. The meeting will consider various measures to preserve the reindeer herding in the Arctic
