Expert discussion "Developing Arctic Transport Corridors"

Theme Block "Global Partnership for the Sustainable Development of the Arctic and the North"

The development of transport corridors in high latitudes is a necessary component of the successful implementation of projects in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation and life support for the population of the Russian North. Today, in conditions of geopolitical change, disruption of conventional logistics chains, reversal of export flows to the East, climate change, the development of transport arteries and infrastructure facilities in the Arctic is becoming both a challenge and an opportunity.

The scale and direction of development of the Arctic region, which directly depend on the transport cross-country, can be estimated by the main target indicators presented in the Strategy for the Development of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and ensuring National Security for the period up to 2035. Thus, in the Arctic zone of our country is supposed to create conditions for migration growth and a sevenfold increase in the number of jobs. By 2035, oil production in the Arctic is expected to reach 26% of Russia’s total and 79% of gas. The volume of liquefied natural gas production is expected to increase by more than 10 times. Based on the strategy's targets, this growth should be accompanied by a sevenfold increase in cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route.

In the focus of the discussion:

  • New edition of the Naval Doctrine of Russia
  • Development of the Northern Sea Route. Re-establishment of the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route.
  • Inland waterways, aviation and land logistics. Modernization and construction of infrastructure.
  • Optimization of the northern delivery.
